The Eighth Market is one of the oldest markets in Xiamen which was established in 1932. Close to the harbor, it is famous for its wide variety of seafood. In addition, there are a lot of places rich in historical stories hidden in the market, forming countless memories for the Xiamen people.
This project selected six different spots from The Eighth Market, each spot is represented by an associated object. The tone of this project tries to create a warm narrative style, let people who live in this city can keep the memories of this special place.
Now The Eighth Market
The Visual
Base on the visual references to magazine, poster and typography from the 1970s to the 1990s. Maintain as two to three low saturation colors which is the one of printing requirements around that period. Each project’s content is bilingual, include in the history, poetry and a authentic photography.
The Fish Shops
Since the 1920s and 1930s, The Eighth Market has been the center for the freshest and cheapest seafood in Xiamen. Most Xiamen people were working on shipping and sea fishing in the past. The early Eighth Market is a place where many fishermen gather to do seafood business after entering Hong Kong.
Yaben Breakfast Store
Yaben Breakfast Store is a traditional taste inherited by three generations which hidden inside The Eighth Market. Serving the most traditional Xiamen food, such as Mainai ( a drink made by wheat), sweet peanut soup, and noodle paste.
First Post Office
The First Post Office located on the west side of The Eighth Market. This is the oldest post office in China, the first post office of Xiamen in the Qing dynasty. It is still used as Xiamen branch post office. The office building here was originally a small two floors building. In 1973, the old building was demolished and converted into the six floors comprehensive business building.
Lujiang Theater
Build in 1942, the Jingcheng Theater was built during the Republic of China. In 1954, it was renamed "Lujiang theater”. As the modern cinemas grew up, the Lujiang theater became less competitive. Today the Lujiang Theater has changed to a culture park for citizens.
Zhushu Church
Directly at the one of the entrances of The Eighth Market was the Zhushu Church (bamboo church), which was built in 1849. Destroyed by fire in the early 1900s, it was rebuilt again only a year later, and in its current incarnation has been constructed in red bricks trimmed with white eaves. Though church doors were closed during The Cultural Revolution, this port-side house of worship has been holding services for more than two unbroken decades.
Dawn Secondhand Books
This is the most unique bookstore in Xiamen. It is located on Xiahe road near The eighth Market, next to the station. This is the only licensed secondhand books in Xiamen.
